Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) Plants: Built to Outlast the Road

Every road fights the same enemies, year after year: heat that softens it, traffic that pounds it, water that creeps into it, and time that wears it all down. Standard bitumen was never designed to win that fight indefinitely. Polymer Modified Bitumen was.

Vimpo designs and manufactures high-efficiency, high-reliability PMB plants that deliver consistent quality batch after batch — engineered for the world's most demanding infrastructure projects.

What Is a Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant?

A PMB plant is where ordinary bitumen gets its upgrade. By blending bitumen with carefully selected polymers, the resulting binder gains a level of elasticity and toughness that raw bitumen simply can't reach on its own.

That difference shows up exactly where it matters: on the road surface itself. Pavements built with PMB resist permanent deformation instead of rutting under heavy traffic. Cracks are slowed before they can spread. Water — bitumen's oldest adversary — has a much harder time working its way into the structure and pulling the aggregate away from the binder. And the slow fatigue that builds up over years of traffic finds a far stronger opponent waiting for it.

For the people who own and maintain these roads, that translates into the numbers they actually care about: fewer maintenance cycles, longer service life, and a lower total cost per kilometer over the years.

Why Quality Can't Be an Afterthought

Not every PMB plant produces the same PMB. The difference between a well-engineered batch and a mediocre one rarely shows up in the lab — it shows up years later, on the road itself, when it's far more expensive to fix.

Three things tend to decide which outcome a project gets: choosing a polymer suited to the local climate, traffic load, and bitumen base in question; starting with bitumen of genuine quality, since no polymer can rescue a poor base material; and running a mill capable of consistent, high-shear blending, since even the best raw inputs fail without it. Get all three right, and PMB becomes a material trusted for the most demanding environments in the world — highways under constant heavy freight, airport runways absorbing repeated aircraft loads, railway beds, metrobus corridors with relentless stop-and-go traffic, and tunnels where humidity and confined conditions punish weaker binders.

The VPM Polymer Modification Plant

This is the gap Vimpo's VPM Polymer Modification Plant is built to close. It's designed for full automatic production, which means the variables that usually depend on an operator's skill and attention — temperature control, shear consistency, polymer dispersion — are locked into a repeatable, high-precision process instead. The plant doesn't just produce PMB; it produces the same high-quality PMB, shift after shift, regardless of who's at the controls.

High production capacity lets the plant scale with a project's real-world demands, while its compact, container-transportable design means it can reach almost any job site on earth without the logistical headaches that usually come with heavy industrial equipment.

For contractors and infrastructure operators working on highways, airports, railways, metrobus systems, and tunnels, the VPM plant is built to do one job reliably: turn ordinary bitumen into a binder engineered to last — wherever the project happens to be.

How To Use VPM B Batch Type Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant?

Before starting to use Vimpo VPM B Batch Type Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant, the operator must first turn on the hot oil system and make the temperature settings. The system starts to be heated with the jacket pump. Preparations are made for the first test examination. should check the values.

The existing bitumen in the Vimpo VPM B Batch Type Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant is heated and brought to the desired temperature. After the bitumen temperature is obtained, the required amount of bitumen should be taken into the tank. The required amount of SBS is mixed in the desired ratio and the mixture is provided in the tank.

After the mixing process is finished, the mixture should be transferred from the mill to the other tank. After the first pass is made and discarded, the mixture is passed through the mill again under the supervision of the operator and sent back to the outlet to the stock tank. The produced polymer modified bitumen is mixed in the stock tank for a certain period of time. Thus, the particles are made completely homogeneous and the mixture becomes ready for use.

Since SBS is mixed into the system in the use of Vimpo VPM B Batch Type Modified Bitumen Plant, the operator has to remove bitumen in the range of 500-1000 kg and clean the residues in the plant. SBS residues dry up and adversely affect the performance and life of the pump and mill.

If the plant is to be stopped after the process is finished and not operated for a certain period of time, the operator must perform this maintenance to prevent the system from clogging. Vimpo VPM B Batch Type Modified Bitumen Plant has a structure that is coupled to be installed under a single piece.

How To Use VPM C Continuous Type Polymer Modification Plant?

Bitumen pump-mill-tank bodies and bitumen line in Vimpo VPM C Continuous Type Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant are heated with hot oil. Depending on the production conditions of the hot oil boiler, it should be run before the modification plant is operated. The mill body temperature must be at least 100-110 ºC before starting production.

If there is a valve mechanically in front of or behind the equipment such as motor-pump etc. to be operated, the relevant valve must be opened first. In order for the mixer to operate in manual mode, the feeding pump must be operated and the mixing tank weight value must be equal to or higher than the mixer operating weight value. After the mixer is started, the bitumen feeding pump is started. When the bitumen pump starts to work, the motor symbol will be green in the automation interface and the icons that symbolize the pump will turn green.

If production is desired while in manual mode, the speed and capacity of the pump must be adjusted. After the bitumen feed pump starts, the polymer feed group is started. After all engines are started and tested, automatic production can be started. For this, firstly, recipe values are introduced to the system and automatic production is started.

When automatic production is started, operations are performed and controlled sequentially by the automation program; The valve in the bitumen feeding line opens and the feeding pump starts after the valve is opened. The feed pump speed setting is adjusted by the system depending on the recipe value and the pump parameter setting. Bitumen starts to fill the agitator tank. After the weight value of the bitumen exceeds the mixer operating value, the mixer starts. Production continues depending on the adjusted design values-parameters-production values.

A Compact Polymer Modified Bitumen Plants

Polymer modified bitumen (PMB) is a type of bitumen that has been modified with the addition of polymers. It is a commonly used material in the construction industry, and is used in a variety of applications including road construction, roofing, and waterproofing.

Bitumen is a sticky, black, hydrocarbon-based material that is commonly used in construction as a waterproofing and protective layer. It is durable and resistant to water, making it an ideal choice for a variety of applications. However, it can be prone to cracking and deformation under certain conditions, particularly when subjected to high temperatures or heavy loads.

To improve the performance of bitumen, polymers are often added to create polymer modified bitumen. These polymers can be added in various forms, including as liquids, gases, or solids, and can be selected based on the specific properties and performance requirements of the material.

The addition of polymers to bitumen improves its performance in a number of ways. It increases the material's flexibility and elongation, making it less prone to cracking and deformation. It also improves the material's resistance to fatigue and wear, making it more durable and long-lasting. Additionally, polymer modified bitumen has improved resistance to water and moisture, making it an excellent choice for waterproofing and protecting surfaces from the elements.

Overall, polymer modified bitumen is a versatile and widely-used material in the construction industry. Its improved performance characteristics make it an ideal choice for a variety of applications, including road construction, roofing, and waterproofing. Its durability and resistance to water and wear make it a valuable tool for protecting and strengthening a range of surfaces.
